Magellan Health

Formerly known as Magellan Health Services, Inc., Magellan Health a for-profit managed healthcare company that is focused on behavioral healthcare. In 2018, it ranked #475 on the Fortune 500.

Magellan Health began as a psychiatric hospital chain, Charter Medical, headquartered in Macon, Ga. The company filed for bankruptcy in 1992, stemming from debt incurred as a result of a 1988 management-led takeover. After recovering, the company moved its headquarters to Atlanta in 1994. The company currently employs more than 10,000 people.

After two decades of mergers and moves (Magellan acquired Merit Behavioral Care Corp., which provided mental health and substance abuse services, in 1997), Magellan Health is now headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Magellan Health goes beyond traditional managed care by delivering behavioral health and employee assistance program services to health plans, employers, Medicaid, Medicare, and the Federal government, including the military. Magellan also delivers specialty health—including musculoskeletal, cardiac, advanced imaging management and physical medicine.

The company’s approach tends to address the costliest areas and most unique needs of health plans. In doing this, Magellan purports to fuel innovations and the discovery of unmet clinical needs to improve both health and financial outcomes.

Advanced analytics, robust networks, and clinical excellence combined with 50 years of experience enables Magellan to meet employers’ financial and health goals. This complete-person perspective inspires a full range of healthcare, including behavioral health, pharmacy benefits management, and specialty health care solutions.
